Barnard College names new president

Other people news: CSUF bio sciences chair receives award, Penn State’s Faculty Senate appoints executive director, TCNJ names School of Ed dean

Sian Beilock has been named the new president of Barnard College, the women’s institution that’s part of Columbia University. As executive vice provost at the University of Chicago, she oversaw the University of Chicago Press, building projects and the school’s engagement with its surrounding community.

Beilock created UChicagoGRAD, an office that trains grad students and postdocs in the skills to become academic leaders.

The National Academy of Sciences gave Beilock the 2017 Troland Research Award, recognizing achievements in experimental psychology from investigators under age 40.

Other people news:

  • Sean Walker, chair of biological sciences at California State University, Fullerton, received the Faculty Leadership in Collegial Governance Award from the university. He was recognized for his work focused on student fees, enrollment management and IT. Walker has improved senate-administration communication and revised or created more than 60 CSUF policy statements.
  • Dawn Blasko has been appointed executive director of Penn State’s Faculty Senate, which represents more than 5,600 full-time faculty at 23 Penn State campuses. She is currently chair of the Elementary and Early Childhood Education program at Penn State Behrend.
  • Suzanne McCotter is the new dean of the School of Education at The College of New Jersey. McCotter served as associate dean for academic affairs of the College of Education and Human Service at Montclair State University.
