TIMES² STEM Academy Partners with Brown University’s Swearer Center for Public Service

Providence, R.I. (October 29, 2018)—TIMES² STEM Academy is excited to announce its partnership with The Swearer Center for Public Service at Brown University. The mission of the three-year partnership is to collaborate to support TIMES² STEM Academy’s programs and services and to advance the student learning goals of the Swearer Center, such as civic engagement, critical reflection and integrative learning.

The cornerstone of the partnership will be the placement of 20 to 40 Brown University student volunteers who will serve as in-school and after-school tutors for TIMES² STEM Academy K12 students and its enrichment programs. The partnership will also feature a Social Justice Fellowship program, a Mini Visiting Lecture series and Leadership Development Talks.

According to TIMES² Inc. Executive Director Dr. Rudolph Moseley Jr., “The students, faculty and staff here at TIMES² are thrilled to partner with The Swearer Center. We look forward to welcoming their student volunteers into our school, while continuing to create a college-going atmosphere for our students.”

Open since 1998, TIMES² STEM Academy is a K12 accredited charter public school committed to improving mathematics, engineering and science studies for urban youth in Providence. TIMES² STEM Academy prepares America’s next scientists, engineers and leaders by providing a rigorous academic program aligned with the state’s requirements. The school name, TIMES² is an acronym, which means: To Improve Mathematics, Engineering and Science Studies. TIMES² STEM Academy is the only K12 STEM school in Rhode Island.

In 1986, then-Brown University President Howard Swearer founded one of the first public service centers in the nation, now named for him—the Swearer Center for Public Service. Today, the Howard R. Swearer Center works with more than 1,200 Brown students, through and with more than 100 community partners—more than half of which are in the Greater Providence area.
