Texas four-year public institutions saw a sizable decrease in international student interest for fall ‘17, with application numbers down 12.5 percent from fall ‘16 numbers: Dropping from 44 percent international yield to 33 percent, or the equivalent of about 10,000 applications.
Some administrators are sourcing the Trump Administration and fluctuating immigration policies as reason for this decline.
But, other recent changes in Texas policy, such as the controversial campus carry law that went into effect in August ‘16, may also be deflecting student interest in the state’s higher ed institutions, says Rajika Bhandari, head of research, policy and practice/director at the IIE Center for Academic Mobility Research and Impact.

She also cites a reported drop in Indian graduate student admission acceptances. Traditionally, there has been a sizable international yield from India, as many of these students come to Texas to study science and engineering.
