New Mexico State University splits top job, names Arvizu chancellor and Floros president

Chancellor Dan Arvizu and President John Floros began their new roles at New Mexico State University in August, a move that marks the creation of the two positions to replace one, due to declining public funding for university institutions and the changing student population.

University regents hired Arvizu and Floros simultaneously to take the place of Chancellor and President Garrey Carruthers.

Arvizu, who was recently senior advisor for environmental advocacy efforts by the nonprofit Emerson Collective, oversees the four-campus university system. Floros is focusing on main-campus operations. He was previously at Kansas State University, where he served as dean of the agriculture college and K-State Cooperative Extension.

  • President Mim L. Runey of the Providence branch of Johnson & Wales University (R.I.) will now oversee all four campuses. She replaces the university’s second chancellor, who retires on December 31.
