MOOC data dig: What to track

University Business, October 2013

There’s no shortage of options for administrators to consider when looking to make decisions from MOOC enrollment data. Here are some ideas suggested by Sam Burgio and Rick Tomlinson, of Jenzabar; Katie Blot and Jarl Jonas, of Blackboard; and Caitlin Garrett, of Rapid Insight:

  • Location
  • Age
  • Gender
  • Ethnicity
  • Education level completed
  • Degrees the student has
  • Socioeconomic level
  • Whether the student has enrolled in/completed a MOOC already
  • Reason for taking the course, such as a career change, gaining skills for current, or personal enrichment
  • Work status
  • Military background
  • Participation level in the course
  • Completion of the course
