Mary Sue Coleman, a former president of the University of Michigan and the University of Iowa, has been named the next president of the Association of American Universities, an organization for research institutions.

She will succeed the retiring Hunter R. Rawlings III, who has held the post since June 2011.

Coleman, who retired in 2014 after 12 years as University of Michigan president, co-chairs the Lincoln Project, an initiative of the American Academy of Arts & Sciences to support public research universities. She also serves on the board of trustees of the Society for Science & the Public.

She is a national spokesperson on the educational value of affirmative action and diverse perspectives in the classroom. Coleman’s appointment is effective June 1, 2016.

Other people news:

  • Margaret Venable was selected as the next president of Georgia’s Dalton State College in September. Venable has been the college’s interim president since January 2015, after former President John Schwenn retired. Prior to this appointment, she was provost and vice president for academic affairs at Gordon State College, also in Georgia.
  • California’s Chapman University President James Doti has announced plans to step down after a 25-year tenure on Aug. 31 to return to teaching. Doti is Chapman’s 12th and longest-serving president.
  • Suffolk University in Boston has appointed Colm Renehan as senior vice president for advancement. Currently the interim vice president for advancement at the University of Alberta in Canada, Renehan will join Suffolk in January 2016.
