First Look at EduComm 2011

University Business, Mar 2011

Old friends and new faces. That's what EduComm attendees can expect to see not only on the exhibit floor and in the session rooms, but also with our keynote speakers. EduComm returns to Orlando, June 13 to 15, at the Hilton Walt Disney World Resort, with more thought-provoking, inspirational content than ever.

One "old friend" is EduComm favorite David Pogue, who will return with an all-new presentation called "The Pogue 2011 Higher Education Tech Update."

The event will take place on Monday, June 13, from 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., following an opening night reception for all EduComm attendees. With geek comedy, music parodies, and unrivaled tech updates, Pogue brings higher ed leaders important insights they can't find anywhere else.

Among the new faces is technology wunderkind Dries Buytaert, the original creator and project lead for Drupal, the open source web platform that promises to redefine many higher ed practices through new collaboration possibilities. Widely used on business, government, and multimedia websites, Drupal is also driving the online presence at a growing number of higher education institutions, including Amherst College (Mass.), Penn State, Davis Applied Technology College (Utah), and Portland State University (Ore.), among others. Buytaert will present "The Open Source Revolution that's Rocking the Campus" during Tuesday morning's general session.

Stephen R. Covey will speak on "Achieving Greatness in Higher
Education Leadership."

Finally, world renowned speaker, consultant, and management expert Stephen R. Covey will present an immersive telepresence discussion about "Achieving Greatness in Higher

Education Leadership" from his headquarters in Utah. EduComm attendees saw a live demonstration of the two-way telepresence technology last year in Las Vegas.

Recognized as one of Time magazine's 25 most influential Americans, Covey recently joined the faculty at Utah State University's Huntsman School of Business. The author of the bestselling The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People and First Things First, Principle-Centered Leadership, among many others, Covey's goal is to show with profound, yet straightforward guidance how every person can truly control his or her destiny.

With a specific focus on the principles of leadership, and their application to the challenges and opportunities of higher education executives, Covey will speak during a lunchtime general session on Tuesday, June 14.

As always, the EduComm breakout sessions will feature the topics and speakers you told us you want to see. Focus areas this year include learning technologies, open source initiatives, recruitment and retention, and much more.

Sessions will be faster-paced and more information-packed so you can return to your institutions armed with proven solutions and actionable ideas to stay ahead of the competition.
