Barry Mills has been appointed deputy chancellor and chief operating officer of the University of Massachusetts Boston. He will oversee the academic and research programs and campus operations, as well as work with the chancellor on developing long-term strategies.

Mills plans to enhance access and opportunity for students in his new role.

Previously, while president of Bowdoin College in Maine for 14 years, he completed a major curriculum reform, strengthened the college’s fiscal position, increased endowment by nearly $1 billion, and managed the construction of green facilities and other conservation efforts.

Mills also replaced loans with grants for all students receiving financial aid, and saw minority enrollment rise from 14 percent in 2011 to 33 percent in 2015.
