It’s not easy to get to a bank, especially for students without cars. A shuttle stops at the local strip mall but there’s only one bank, so if that’s not your bank you can’t cash your check. That problem is gone with refunds going right into our OneAccounts.

Those of us at residential liberal arts institutions are used to attracting the traditional, “18-year-old fresh out of high school” student.

When I applied to colleges 40 years ago, I wrote letters to six schools and received a view book from each with a friendly cover letter, an invitation to visit the campus, an application, and a pointer to an alum or two who would be glad to sit down with me and discuss my future.

RESIDENCE HALLS HAVE COME A LONG WAY. THE traditional double-loaded corridors, cramped quarters, and cinderblock walls are being replaced by places nearly anyone would proudly call home.

For students at Sam Houston State University, a slim wallet-size card is the key to getting financial aid refunds, a paycheck from a campus job, access to the dorm, a good book , a good meal and more.

I want to move as far as possible into this world because it is what students are used to. They know technology. They do not want to go to offices to fill out paper forms.

Having grown up in a world of ATMs, debit cards and online banking, students at the University of Louisville wanted a better way to receive financial aid and other types of refunds. Receiving paper checks through the mail was slow, inconvenient and unreliable.
