The Council of Independent Colleges (CIC) today announced that Lilly Endowment Inc. has awarded CIC a grant of $6,897,375 to foster the intellectual and theological exploration of vocation among undergraduate students at independent colleges and universities. It is the largest grant ever received by the Council of Independent Colleges.

A major change in freshman admission requirements for the University of California this year was supposed to ease the burden of standardized test-taking for high school seniors and allow more students to apply.

During recent years the state's community colleges and four state universities have had record-breaking enrollments, but this fall those numbers are down about 2 percent — a decline apparently related to state budget cuts, at least for community colleges.

As about 3,000 people -- parents and students interested in higher education -- sought answers from about 60 historically black colleges and universities at a college fair Thursday night, a recruiter commented on how the economy has affected his university.
