Old Dominion University's governing board delayed a scheduled vote Thursday on a regulation that would tighten gun restrictions on campus - a proposal that spurred dueling demonstrations by pro- and anti-gun advocates last month.

StateUniversity.com, an online clearinghouse with several various rankings of the country's 2-year and 4-year colleges, says that several Michigan colleges are top-ranked when it comes to campus safety.

After a recent spike in armed robberies near Tulane University, campus police are doubling the amount of off-campus patrols in the surrounding neighborhoods and changing the way students request a shuttle bus. Students were victims in four of the area's seven robberies since Thanksgiving.

The Virginia State Crime Commission on Tuesday endorsed a plan to have college and local police departments assist each other with campus death and rape investigations if necessary, but it stopped short of mandating that authorities share information.

The alarm system is fixed, exterior doors have been repaired and additional security guards have been hired at The District at ODU, a popular private dormitory that city officials cracked down on earlier this year after an inspection found myriad security and safety problems.
