Institutions must work together to transfer technologies from academic research laboratories to those who will use them to create businesses and jobs, and ultimately boost southeast Wisconsin's economy, says a report released Monday by the Public Policy Forum.

The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee no longer will be known as a local commuter school, but an international research institution that fuels economic growth, helps solve the region's problems and boosts the number of college graduates in Wisconsin, Mike Lovell vowed on the eve of his inauguration as UWM's eighth chancellor.

Now, the Bucksbaums are donating $42 million to the university to create an institute devoted to improving medical students’ handling of the doctor-patient relationship. The Bucksbaum Institute for Clinical Excellence, to be announced Thursday, will be led by Dr. Siegler.

Washington's apple and pear growers have given Washington State University a $27 million gift for tree fruit research, funded by a special tax on fruit. It's the largest gift in the university's history.
