For years, the University of Central Arkansas has put off giving professors pay raises while the struggling university tried to climb out of fiscal distress, officials said. Now, just as UCA is on the cusp of recovery, faculty members are starting to think about leaving unless they get pay raises soon.

Gov. Bob McDonnell has reappointed Helen Dragas, the rector of the University of Virginia Board of Visitors who was instrumental in the controversial, short-lived ouster of the school's president, Teresa Sullivan.

The governing boards of colleges and universities are increasingly demanding that their presidents perform more like corporate chief executives, much to the chagrin of academics who say treating colleges as businesses doesn't fit the mission of higher education.
