To cut about $2.6 million from Southern University at New Orleans' budget, Chancellor Victor Ukpolo announced plans to lay off employees, cut back on maintenance and energy use, and let vacancies go unfilled. Jobs of tenured and tenure-track faculty members arel not at risk "at this point," he said.

When the Texas A&M University System announced that its flagship would gain $260 million in new revenue and savings in the next 10 years by outsourcing its building maintenance, landscaping and dining services, Chancellor John Sharp said the plan was an unprecedented way to raise money in financially struggling higher education.

An inordinately high number of workplace complaints at California State University, Sacramento, reflects the "state worker environment" on the capital campus, according to a report commissioned by officials and obtained this week by The Bee.

The state's public colleges and universities are absorbing a fifth round of budget cuts since 2008. In the new state budget, higher education was cut by $66 million, bringing total cuts since 2008 to $420 million.
