California's community college system Chancellor Jack Scott said Monday that it would be a "disaster" if City College of San Francisco lost its accreditation and had to close, and urged any reluctant college leaders to accept that cuts need to be made and do what needs to be done to save themselves.

While lawmakers in Madison acknowledge the need to invest in Wisconsin's technical colleges, it remains to be seen if they are willing to nearly double the amount of money available for state-financed student financial aid grants in the next state budget.

There are too many worms. In a mid-Manhattan classroom, 20 applicants write their thoughts about going to community college on paper cutouts and stick them to a poster of a tree — multicolored, tapered leaves for hopes, square bits of trunk for strengths, squiggly worms for fears. The worms dominate.
