Integrating mobile devices in learning is getting to be old hat in Abilene, Texas.

As early as 2008, Abilene Christian University (ACU) was the first university in the United States to provide each incoming student with an Apple iPhone or iPod Touch. Each of the nearly 4,800 students on the ACU campus located 180 miles west of Dallas can access course calendars, campus maps, receive homework alerts, security alerts, and answer in-class surveys and quizzes, among other ACUdeveloped web applications.

Nearly 50 percent of higher education administrators feel their time and attendance systems are out of date, and 53 percent of systems in use by colleges and universities are not automated.

These findings are part of the 2012 Center for Digital Education research project sponsored by Kronos, the workforce management company responsible for systems in use by schools such as the University of Georgia. In contrast, employees and managers of University of Georgia do not tediously fill out paper timesheets. Instead, the 8,000 hourly employees use biometric time collection clocks and web entry processes from Kronos.

As lecture capture has become more widespread, users have learned how to expand the capabilities and uses of these systems. College and university records administrators are increasingly under the gun to meet regulatory and compliance mandates pertaining to document retention and security. This would be no big deal if they just had to track and control a couple of documents (and if these documents were all pretty much the same) but of course, this is hardly the case.

“Institutions of higher education generate millions of documents and are producing these at record speed,” says Linda Ding, education strategist for Laserfiche. “And these documents are very diverse. You can only imagine how complex it is to track and ensure that all the documents generated follow compliance requirements.”
