California State University, Fresno, takes pride in its reputation as one of the leading public universities in the state, but last year the business staff discovered that Fresno State was lagging in one noteworthy area: the percentage of students electing to receive financial aid refunds electronically.

"We took a hard look at our refund disbursement trends and saw that we were sending paper checks to 40 percent of our students,” says Anthony Forestiere, university controller at Fresno State. “We contacted other schools in the Cal State system and found they were sending refunds by check to only 5 to 15 percent of their students.”

With more than 25,000 students, DePaul University in Chicago is the largest Catholic university in the United States. With 10 colleges divided between two campuses, along with three additional satellite campuses, finding certain pieces of information can be challenging for students.

Memorizing maps, building locations, and class times is an additional stress on freshmen adjusting to college life. DePaul realized that being able to access such information on the go, at any time, would make life much easier for its students. Since twothirds of DePaul’s students already owned a smartphone, a mobile answer seemed to be the best solution.

As lecture capture has become more widespread, users have learned how to expand the capabilities and uses of these systems. Simply recording a full lecture live and posting it online isn’t necessarily the most effective way for students to learn, and not the most effective way to get the most out of your lecture capture investment. When the University of Alberta recently decided to seek Information Technology Infrastructure Library certification, it did so with confidence. It knew it had an ace in the hole: Alcatel-Lucent’s VitalQIP DNS/DHCP IP Address Management solution.
The solution, which automates IP address management services across networks, positions Alberta well for certification in ITIL—information technology practices and policies that emphasize alignment of IT services with business objectives. The university has more than 10 years of experience with VitalQIP, which is a big hit at the school and will play a major role in achieving ITIL compliance.

The Stanford University School of Medicine, the Academic Technologies department of George Washington University, and the Wake Forest Schools of Business have been named this year’s winners.

Athens State University—like many institutions of higher education today—is grappling with the challenges of a growing segment of students who take classes online. In fact, 51 percent of the two-year school’s student body takes classes exclusively online. To best serve those students by providing them with the flexibility to view course content anytime, anywhere, Athens State uses Tegrity lecture capture. However, that’s not where Tegrity’s benefits end. Today, the university is preparing a large deployment of Tegrity’s remote proctoring feature, which allows students to take exams in their own homes, while still ensuring the integrity of the results.

The uses for AV technologies in higher ed aren’t limited to traditional classrooms. At the University of Florida’s new three-story, 100,000 square-foot veterinary teaching hospital, an integrated AV network is woven into the fabric of the building. In this University Business web seminar, originally presented on May 22, 2012, David John, safety and security supervisor at the College of Veterinary Medicine, discussed how the hospital is using its AV network to improve patient care as well as the learning experience for students.
