With over 15,000 regular students and a campus that spans 96 acres, Southern Alberta Institute of Technology (SAIT) in Calgary produces a significant amount of waste. “In late 2008, as part of a campus expansion project, we sought a more sustainable approach to our daily operations management practices,” says John Millington, manager of facilities operations and campus expansion projects. “We knew to meet the goals of that plan, we needed a new partner that would focus on waste diversion and sustainability.”

Colleges and universities have widely embraced sustainability goals and commitments, from climate action plans to zero-waste goals. However, in order to see measurable results, they must address the largest growing waste stream in the United States: electronic waste, or e-waste. This web seminar, originally broadcast on July 15, 2014, shared how the University of San Diego has been able to turn this growing waste stream into a revenue stream. In 2011, USD opened the Electronics Recycling Center (ERC), San Diego’s first full-time e-waste collection facility for the public.

Game days at university campuses tend to generate a large amount of waste, which is costly to the environment and the institution. To demonstrate its devotion to sustainability, the University of Arizona partnered with Waste Management to implement an extensive recycling program at its football stadium during the 2012 season, successfully diverting over 25 tons of trash from the landfill.

ith the costs of higher education continuing to soar, many colleges and universities are looking for innovative ways to lower expenses, while simultaneously pursuing their long-term sustainability goals. The University of New Hampshire (UNH) is proving that both objectives are, indeed, achievable.

UNH is the largest university in that state. Its Durham campus, home to approximately 15,000 students, covers 1,100 acres, with 300 acres devoted to its campus "core." Although by all appearances a "traditional New England campus," UNH takes great pride in being among the first higher education institutions in America to pursue an environmental sustainability program.

 

Kathy Paschke is network specialist for voice at Riverside Community College in Riverside, California. She manages a telecommunications system that serves the college’s nine locations.

The green movement focuses on four factors: clean energy, energy efficiency, environmentally friendly production, and the conservation and reduction of waste materials. Information technology offices at institutions can exercise great control in energy efficiency benefitting not only the institution, but the surrounding community as well.

A: Voice-over IP is the ability to transmit voice over your data network. In its simplest form, it’s moving voice from traditional telephony standards into an IP environment.

With Expansive views of the mighty Hudson River and a campus that consistently ranks among the nation’s most beautiful, Marist College in Poughkeepsie, NY, offers students an idyllic setting for learning. Still, like every other school, Marist faces serious threats to its IT network, and its unique campus, with 49 buildings spread across 180 acres, posed special security challenges to its IT staff.

Nearly a decade ago, Oklahoma City Community College installed state-of-the-art administrative system technology from Datatel that linked its student, finance, and human resources information systems together. It worked wonderfully - until staff turnover and training lapses diminished its utility.

“Our front-line people over the past decade really did not have the opportunity to stay current with the platform’s functionality in all areas,” said Marion Paden, OCCC’s vice president for enrollment and student services. “If you don’t have people actively engaged in the training, then things get lost. So the efficiency was not there.”
