California State University, Fresno, takes pride in its reputation as one of the leading public universities in the state, but last year the business staff discovered that Fresno State was lagging in one noteworthy area: the percentage of students electing to receive financial aid refunds electronically.

"We took a hard look at our refund disbursement trends and saw that we were sending paper checks to 40 percent of our students,” says Anthony Forestiere, university controller at Fresno State. “We contacted other schools in the Cal State system and found they were sending refunds by check to only 5 to 15 percent of their students.”

Nearly 50 percent of higher education administrators feel their time and attendance systems are out of date, and 53 percent of systems in use by colleges and universities are not automated.

These findings are part of the 2012 Center for Digital Education research project sponsored by Kronos, the workforce management company responsible for systems in use by schools such as the University of Georgia. In contrast, employees and managers of University of Georgia do not tediously fill out paper timesheets. Instead, the 8,000 hourly employees use biometric time collection clocks and web entry processes from Kronos.

Which is better, a movie or a painting?

The question is confounding: Each has its unique qualities and characteristics and stands on its own, but an innovative new exhibit at The Williams College Museum of Art boldly places paintings alongside early films to show how artists and audiences of the late 1800s-early 1900s bounced back and forth between the two media, according to Nancy Mowll Mathews, the Eug?nie Prendergast Senior Curator of 19th and 20th Century Art at the Williamstown, MA-based museum (www.wcma.org).
