Every college strives to maximize electronic payments, but there will always be a need for departments to take in-person payments via check, cash, credit and debit card. Schools that handle these payments and the resulting departmental deposits the way they did 10 years ago, with paper forms and manual data entry, may be missing opportunities for efficiencies and savings. Jack Gochenaur was hearing scary stories around campus. Some financial aid students didn't know whether they'd received loans or grants to pay for their education. Many had no idea what they'd need to earn to meet their monthly loan payments.

"I have students who reach their senior year and during exit counseling, it's the first time they know how much money they owe," said Gochenaur, Chief Financial Officer/Treasurer of Manchester College, a 1,300-student liberal arts college in North Manchester, Indiana.

Something, he realized, had to change.

Avila University had a communications problem. Or rather, a communications coordination problem.

A flawed process prevented admissions representatives, coaches, department chairs and others from knowing what each had told prospective students. The confusion hindered administrators at the private Catholic school that prides itself on getting to know every single one of its 1,800 students.

 

Wilmington University’s open admissions policy, flexible scheduling and 11 locations in Delaware and New Jersey are fundamental to its mission of offering careeroriented undergraduate and graduate degree programs for a diverse range of traditional and nontraditional students.

The 53-campus system includes seven state universities and 25 community and technical colleges offering more than 3,500 programs to 374,000 students and 140,000 continuing career education enrollees. With campuses five to six hours apart, Karen Bergmeier, ITS project lead- er and Cisco WebExTM solution liaison, found herself traveling four to five hours two to three times each week to conduct training on the system’s proprietary software.

 

Today's campus communities are more connected than ever, but at many colleges and universities the task of immediately notifying everyone about an emergency remains a challenge.

Which is better, a movie or a painting?

The question is confounding: Each has its unique qualities and characteristics and stands on its own, but an innovative new exhibit at The Williams College Museum of Art boldly places paintings alongside early films to show how artists and audiences of the late 1800s-early 1900s bounced back and forth between the two media, according to Nancy Mowll Mathews, the Eug?nie Prendergast Senior Curator of 19th and 20th Century Art at the Williamstown, MA-based museum (www.wcma.org).

The green movement focuses on four factors: clean energy, energy efficiency, environmentally friendly production, and the conservation and reduction of waste materials. Information technology offices at institutions can exercise great control in energy efficiency benefitting not only the institution, but the surrounding community as well.

Seeking an alternative to the slow and inefficient system of mailing financial aid and other refund checks to students, Imperial Valley College set up its own direct deposit system. The only problem was just one out of 10 students signed up.

 

A commitment to reaching out and meaningfully connecting with its students has prompted Chicago-based DePaul University to implement a customer relationship management (CRM) tool traditionally used by businesses to generate more customers. The university’s well-known entrepreneurial spirit is one reason underlying the initiative, but there are other equally - if not more - compelling reasons:
