For Texas A&M University faculty moving from one Liberal Arts and Humanities smart classroom to another, there is no learning curve. That’s because classrooms and conference rooms in the department have standardized equipment. The College Station, Texas, university’s Instructional Media Services Department installed an AMX controller and touch panel in every room, a move that keeps the comfort level high for instructors.

As more students and faculty started bringing their own digital devices to campus, the University of Ottawa in Ontario, Canada recognized the need for more interactive learning at the bilingual public research institution. The university responded by employing flipped classrooms, in which the traditional lecture and homework elements are reversed; active learning, in which students read, write, and discuss topics instead of listening to lectures; and specialized spaces, providing educational environments geared toward tech-savvy students and staff.

Lecturers are treated like royalty at Penn State’s Struthers Auditorium, a lecture theater in the Smeal College of Business with a range of setups that can accommodate just about any teaching style. "We have designed features to support the instructor’s pedagogical style,” explains Gary Field, research systems manager for the Smeal College of Business. “Our multiple projector design allows instructors to project multiple sources side-by-side—for example, a document camera to show notes while a video is playing.

Technology has enabled higher education to extend instruction outside of the traditional classroom. New lecture capture technology such as the McGraw-Hill Tegrity Mobile App allows professors and students to record information on-the-go. In this web seminar, originally broadcast on October 18, 2012, instructors from Laramie County (Wyo.) Community College demonstrated how they use the app to enhance their lab, online, and hybrid classes in the Geosciences department.

As lecture capture has become more widespread, users have learned how to expand the capabilities and uses of these systems. Simply recording a full lecture live and posting it online isn’t necessarily the most effective way for students to learn, and not the most effective way to get the most out of your lecture capture investment. In fact, the term ‘lecture capture’ is misleading, as this technology can be used for much more than just capturing lectures. The uses for AV technologies in higher ed aren’t limited to traditional classrooms. At the University of Florida’s new three-story, 100,000 square-foot veterinary teaching hospital, an integrated AV network is woven into the fabric of the building. In this University Business web seminar, originally presented on May 22, 2012, David John, safety and security supervisor at the College of Veterinary Medicine, discussed how the hospital is using its AV network to improve patient care as well as the learning experience for students.

Clemson University, located in the Upstate of South Carolina, has always been quick to use technology tools to advance the accessibility of higher education.

With 55 sites around the world, 17,000 students and 5,000 faculty and staff, distance learning, training, support and the accessibility to other suites of e-education tools is critical.

Adobe Connect is a key tool in that effort, said Deb Charles, manager of instructional services for the university's computing and information technology department.

 

Implementation of a laptop program was the beginning of the simplification and standardization of IT at Grove City College (PA), a common enough move these days as anywhere, anytime computing becomes the campus norm. What makes this program strikingly different from other colleges’ is that it was launched - in partnership with HP - more than a decade ago when laptops were not the sleek, ubiquitous tools they are today.

As new technologies are developed, many tried-and-true staples of academia have fallen. So it is with the carousel slide projector.

Long a staple of art history classes, slide projectors are becoming obsolete, and while many professors and instructors have plenty of media, they don't have a way to replace the projector itself.

For the University of Denver's multimedia department this presented an opportunity not only to solve an immediate problem but to create something that would go beyond the traditional uses of media objects.

Moving student transactions online and establishing an information hub for the campus - all the while increasing its personal touch with students - was the challenge Butler University faced last year when it took on the task of streamlining administrative tasks that were normally handled by faculty and advisors. The overarching goal was to free up the faculty and advisors so they could spend more time guiding students' college careers and less time performing administrative tasks such as registration.
