UNI Faculty Leans Toward Refusing to Take Furloughs

Unionized faculty members at the University of Northern Iowa probably will refuse to take unpaid time off unless UNI leaders offer something in exchange, a faculty leader said Friday.
"If I took a pay cut proposal and nothing else to the faculty for ratification, I seriously doubt they would ratify it," said Hans Isakson, the faculty union's president. "They would expect something in return for what they give up."
The union's leaders will meet with UNI administrators next week for the first time since the state Board of Regents approved plans to chop $58 million in state aid from Iowa's three state-run universities.
Gov. Chet Culver's 10 percent, across-the-board budget cut spurred the plans.
