Delaware State University and Dover International Speedway are located across from each other on U.S. 13.
But aside from NASCAR fans using DSU parking lots on race weekend, the two institutions have had little to do with each other over the years.
Now, following in the footsteps of diversity efforts throughout stock car racing, Monster Racing Excitement, which operates a fan driving experience at the track, has partnered with the historically black university to create a diversity program of their own.
Monster Racing will help market the university to the NASCAR fan base, which has been estimated to include 75 million people. The partnership will also promote stock car racing on campus.
"We're real excited about it," said Michael Wilson, associate athletic director of marketing and management at DSU. "When I first came here, I noticed that Dover [International Speedway] was across the street and I wanted to come up with some kind of theme and exposure that would bring the two of us together.
