The University of Vermont's faculty union has filed a contract grievance against the University for paying female professors less than their male counterparts.
The union, United Academics, charges that UVM discriminated against five female assistant clinical professors of nursing in regards to their salaries. The grievance points to a case two years ago when the school hired a man for a similar position to the one held by the women. The union says he had similar education and credentials but received a much higher salary than the more experienced women. His offer was also higher than an offer made to a female six months earlier for the same position.
An investigation concluded the salary differences were based on gender. The University was reportedly unwilling make a settlement offer. The union is now bringing the case to the Vermont Labor Relations Board. The first hearing is scheduled for Thursday.
