Schools Drop Landlines As More Students Carry Cell

Consumers are moving away from being tied-down by landlines. And so too are universities as more students carry cell phones.

Starting this fall, schools around the state -- including University of Wisconsin campuses in Green Bay, Madison, Oshkosh, Parkside, Whitewater and Marquette University -- will eliminate landlines in most or all student rooms.

Landlines have been slowly disappearing from colleges. Alverno College and UW-Eau Claire dropped landlines last fall. UW-Milwaukee has been without landlines for two years.

Glenn Gray, UW-Green Bay's director of residence life, said nearly all students on campus have cell phones and it's not worth the cost of offering landlines when students don't use them.

The university's long-distance carrier dropped the school three years ago due to a lack of use.

"It's not feasible to offer (landlines) at their expense when they're not using them," Gray said.
