Yale lockdown lifted; police doubting accuracy of initial gunman report

Police continued to search part of the Yale University campus on Monday afternoon, hours after an anonymous caller said someone was headed to campus with a gun, but they were also investigating whether the call was a hoax.

The man who made the call — at 9:48 a.m. — said his roommate was headed to campus with a "long gun" to shoot people, police said. He did not identify himself and hung up before offering more details, said New Haven Police spokesman Officer David Hartman.

"We are tracking down the person who made that phone call," said New Haven Police Chief Dean Esserman at an afternoon press conference.

That person "sounded like a confused gentleman," Esserman said. "I wouldn't describe his words as clear and concise."
