About 430 Western Michigan University maintenance, custodial, dining and landscaping employees will receive a 2 percent raise by 2013 after negotiating contracts for six months.

The WMU Board of Trustees approved their final employee contract of the year with the local branches of the American Federation of State, County, and Municipal Employees Council during a conference-call meeting on Friday morning.

The employee hourly pay rates range from approximately $12 to $22 hourly pay rate, according to the WMU-AFSCME negotiator Dennis Moore. He said union members ratified the contract this week. The 2 percent pay raise parallels those that faculty, administrators and other union employees are receiving.

“Basically, we’re the only group on campus that has a presence in the students' life in every aspect of their university experience,” said Moore. “We work where they eat, sleep, work and play. I’m proud our members did our part to make WMU be better. It’s important (the Board of Trustees) doesn’t forget that fact going forward.”
