Wisconsin's flex degree program tries to boost college grads, fill job needs

Aaron Apel dropped out of the University of Wisconsin-Platteville halfway through his second year, got a factory job, married his college sweetheart and later completed an associate's degree to become a computer specialist.

"College wasn't a good fit for me," said Apel, now 38 and the father of three. "I spent too much on the social side of things and never really was into the traditional delivery method of sitting in a classroom."

Apel took the first step Monday toward finishing the bachelor's degree he started in 1993 by applying to the UW System's new Flexible Option Degree Program.
