In the story that went along with last year’s spending database, I mused that maintaining excellence in college football comes with a steep price tag. Well, it appears that investment in college football pays dividends for teams that spend at the highest levels. For the second straight year, the biggest spender in college football also took home a BCS national title.

Despite stumbling during the regular season against Louisiana State University in a less than thrilling 9-6 overtime loss, the University of Alabama rallied to blank LSU in the 2011 national title game.
