On Friday, members of the Kalamazoo community can get their first look at Western Michigan University's new high-tech Archives.

The university will hold a dedication ceremony from 4 to 5 p.m. for the Charles C. and Lynn L. Zhang Legacy Collections Center. The new $8.7 million home of the WMU Archives and Regional History Collections is located at 165 Oakland Dr., just north of the intersection of Howard St. and Oakland Drive.

Over the summer, some 30,000 cubic feet of documents, diaries, photographs, letters and government records moved into the new 16,000-square-foot building.

Documents are stacked as high as 30 feet in the air in high-density shelving units, which are built close together and swing open on tracks to allow archivists access to materials. The staff can access documents on the top shelves via an order picker, which looks like an elevator combined with a forklift.
