UWA to tweak firearm policies

The University of West Alabama’s Board of Trustees is expected to consider a revised campus firearms policy at its quarterly meeting on Monday in Livingston.

UWA Campus Police Chief Jeff Manuel and President Richard Holland said the new policy was similar to rules adopted by other universities and colleges in Alabama in response to a new gun law that went into effect in early August.

The new state law primarily addresses where and how gun owners may carry or transport their firearms. Gun owners may openly carry firearms in public places and on private property with consent, and those with concealed-carry permits may have handguns on public and private property with some exceptions.
