UW-Milwaukee launches research center construction

A big red crane towering above the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee's main campus marks the first academic construction project there in nearly 20 years and signals the university's aspirations to raise its national research profile.

The five-story Kenwood Interdisciplinary Research Center at Maryland Ave. and Kenwood Blvd. will be the largest academic building on campus with about 150,000 gross square feet. It's expected to be completed in early 2015.

Two more buildings of similar size may be added at the site to create an interdisciplinary research complex for the so-called STEM fields — science, technology, engineering and mathematics.
