UTSW Official At Center Of Fraud Investigation Stepping Down

A UT Southwestern Medical Center department chairwoman in the crosshairs of a federal investigation into alleged billing fraud at Parkland Memorial Hospital will step down, according to an internal memo distributed to the medical school’s employees.

Dr. Karen Kowalske, who has served as chair of the physical medicine and rehabilitation department at UTSW and director of PM&R services at Parkland, “has decided” to leave her post once a replacement is found, the announcement says.

I asked UTSW officials this morning whether they requested that Kowalske – a key defendant in a whistleblower lawsuit that triggered the U.S. Justice Department investigation – step down.

They sent an email back saying no, and said they were “delighted” that she will continue her career as a faculty member at the university.
