University of Michigan School of Kinesiology offering new health and fitness major

Baby boomers are getting older, the U.S. population is getting heavier and chronic disease seems increasingly prevalent— so personal trainers need more training then ever.

That's the thought behind University of Michigan's new health and fitness major, which the School of Kinesiology is piloting this semester.

"They're attempting to graduate people that are going to be able to handle that demand as it increases," said Mike Stack, the owner of Ann Arbor's Applied Fitness Solutions and a U-M graduate. "The depth of knowledge you gain from having a degree is exponentially more than you will ever get from any weekend personal training workshop.
