University Of Michigan-Flint Faculty Committee Report: Number Of Tenured Faculty Not Keeping Up With Enrollment And Program Growth

As a tenured professor at the University of Michigan-Flint, Nathan Oaklander has presented philosophy papers in Israel and Italy, written textbooks his students use and researched subjects published in international journals.

UM-Flint English lecturer Jim Anderson is non tenured but devotes all of his time to teaching, charged with a full class load and developing new innovative courses in topics he’s interested in.

Two teachers, two cultures on the same campus.

“I’m not under the gun to publish or perish,” said Anderson, who has taught at UM-Flint for 23 years and helped form a union for non-tenured instructors.
