The University of Denver has named Rebecca Chopp, most recently president at Swarthmore College near Philadelphia, as the school's 18th chancellor — and the first woman to hold the position.

Chopp succeeds Robert Coombe, who served as chancellor for the last nine years and announced his retirement after 33 years with DU.

Before her time at Swarthmore, Chopp was president of Colgate University. Previous jobs include time as provost and executive vice president for academic affairs at Emory University and as a dean at Yale University.
