University of Conn. president responds to sexual violence controversy

University of Connecticut President Susan Herbst delivered a clearly worded message of sympathy for victims of sexual violence and said such crimes will not be tolerated.

The tenor of her remarks stood in sharp contrast to earlier comments in response to a lawsuit and federal complaint filed by women who say UConn did not adequately respond to their sexual assault complaints.

In late October, after the women came forth, Herbst rebutted allegations that the university had been indifferent, calling them "astonishingly misguided and demonstrably untrue." At the time, her comments were viewd by some state lawmakers and others as insensitive and defensive.
