University of Akron president Luis Proenza will step down in 2014

University of Akron President Luis Proenza announced that he will step down on June 30, 2014, concluding a 15-year career in which a commuter school bisected by city streets transformed to a residential campus with 22 new buildings and 34 new acres of green space.

Proenza’s reach also extended into the classroom, where he championed new academic programs, such as corrosion engineering, created a national center for applied research and developed partnerships with industry.

He also oversaw increases in enrollment, student success and fundraising.
