Univ of Colorado President Bruce Benson Turns Down $11,000 Raise

For the first time in a few years, the University of Colorado is doling out raises to its top-performing employees -- but CU President Bruce Benson passed his up.

"I'm not here trying to make money," Benson said in an interview this week.

Benson earns $359,100, which is less than his starting salary, because, amid the recession, he was among the top administrators who took 5 percent pay cuts, said CU system spokesman Ken McConnellogue.

It's also far below the median salary of university presidents at public universities, which registered at $436,000 in 2010, according to the Chronicle of Higher Education.
