Univ. of Alabama in Huntsville Reels From Loss Of National Solar Observatory To Colorado

The University of Alabama in Huntsville on Friday fell short of becoming the new headquarters for the National Solar Observatory.

The University of Colorado, the other finalist, won the program with a $20 million annual budget. And the New Jersey Institute of Technology, under President Dr. Robert Altenkirch, had a partnership with the University of Colorado in the project.

Altenkirch was hired last week as president at UAH and is expected to be on campus in November.

The relationship NJIT had with Colorado was not widely known. It came to light Friday when NJIT was credited in assisting Colorado with "the winning bid" in a University of Colorado statement.
