UConn, Other Schools Lose Dozens To Retirement

A new report says more than 160 employees of Connecticut colleges and universities retired over the last 10 months, including 61 UConn professors and dozens of community college employees.

The state Office of Policy and Management released the figures as part of an overall count that showed 2,628 state workers retired between Jan. 1 and Aug. 31.

Eligible state employees had until Oct. 1 to retire before changes to pension and retiree health care benefits took effect.

The retirements in state colleges and universities, including UConn, come as they balance tight budgets against the need to hire enough professors to keep class sizes down.
