The University of Connecticut has appointed ecology scholar Gene Likens, who has been honored for his early work on acid rain, as a special environmental adviser.
UConn's announcement Thursday said Likens will work with students, faculty and staff on sustainability projects and initiatives and advise the university on environmental policy and research.
Likens founded of the Cary Institute of Ecosystem Students in New York and co-founded the Hubbard Brook Ecosystem Study. He received a 2001 national Medal of Science and was co-recipient of the 2003 Blue Planet Prize. His current focus is forest and aquatic ecosystems at the Hubbard Brook experimental forest in New Hampshire.
