UW-Madison is seeking to block a pair of property owners from razing two campus-area apartment buildings and replacing them with a single, larger apartment building, arguing the properties should be reserved for eventual university use.
Compounding the problem: Three plans for the area — the neighborhood plan, the city's comprehensive plan, and the UW campus master plan — don't agree on how the area should change and grow.
Joseph McCormick and Dennis Catterson have submitted plans to the city to tear down their properties at 202-206 N. Brooks St. and replace them with a single five-story building. The joint venture would increase the number of apartments at the location from six to 14.
The university, however, is asking the city to stop the redevelopment because the properties, which sit on a block predominantly made up of UW-owned buildings, are part of the UW campus master plan.
