U Of Wisconsin System Regents Pick Leader

In an unusual turn of events, the University of Wisconsin System Board of Regents deadlocked Friday before choosing new leadership.

The vote was framed around who could best navigate the state's political and economic environment, and who could best maintain the board's independence from political influence.

Traditionally, the regents' vice president automatically moves up to become president, and the vote is a formality.

Friday, current vice president Brent Smith and Regent Michael Falbo, who has close ties to the Republican Party, each won nine votes for board president in three paper ballots during the regents' second day of meetings on the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee campus.
