It's official: Enrollment of nonresident undergrads at University of Wisconsin campuses will be capped at 27.5%, starting next fall.

The cap, which does not include Minnesota students attending Wisconsin schools under the reciprocity agreement, will give UW-Madison some flexibility in managing its enrollment.

It also will raise by about 200 the number of freshman seats offered to Wisconsin residents at UW-Madison, easing concerns that too many strong Wisconsin students aren't getting into the flagship, which this fall enrolled 25.8% nonresident undergrads, not including Minnesota reciprocity students.

UW-Madison had requested the cap be raised to 30%, but several members of the UW System Board of Regents expressed concern that it would reduce access for Wisconsin students.
