The University of Michigan says it's received a record number of applications from aspiring freshmen for the fifth straight year.
The school said Wednesday 39,570 people have applied for the 2011-12 freshman class, up 25 percent from last year.
The projected size of the incoming class is about 5,970. The university says that's a drop of about 500 from last year as officials work to decrease the size of the class to maintain a relatively constant undergraduate population.
Overall, 16,046 of the applicants were offered admission to the Ann Arbor campus as of the first week of June.
