U Of Iowa Sees Record Math Number

In a discipline that’s all about numbers, the University of Iowa’s department of mathematics is celebrating a noteworthy total this year.

Seven minority students are set to earn their doctorates in math in 2012, a record number for a department already recognized as a national leader in its efforts to promote diversity within its Ph.D. program.

To put that in context — in a discipline dominated by white males and international students — just 40 minority U.S. citizens received their doctorates nationally in 2011, and only 27 did so in 2010, University of Iowa professor Phil Kutzko said.

“We like to think that in many ways, we’re the new American math department,” Kutzko said.
