University of Iowa athletic director Gary Barta announced Friday he has reassigned Fred Mims — the former supervisor of an official accused of sexually harassing students — to a different position with fewer responsibilities and likely a decreased salary.
Barta also said Friday that the department’s compliance and student services units are now separate departments under the leadership of interim directors.
Both Mims’ reassignment and the reorganization are in part in response to the sexual harassment allegations surrounding former student-athlete adviser Peter Gray, Barta said.
An internal investigation obtained by the Iowa City Press-Citizen found that Mims, the university’s longtime associate athletic director for student services and compliance, had received complaints about Gray’s behavior and warned him about it on multiple occasions. Gray — who worked at the university from 2002 to last month and between 1993 and 1995 — resigned after an investigative report concluded he had violated the university’s sexual harassment policy.
