The University of Colorado -- which announced last week that it hit an all-time high fundraising record -- is putting more emphasis on bequest commitments, with about $190 million in the pipeline from donors who have made pledges in their wills.
More than $30 million in future estate commitments were recorded by the CU Foundation this year, a fundraising figure that was not included in the record $228.6 figure that CU announced it raised last week. The money is not counted as a gift until the donor passes away and the estate settlement occurs.
CU launched a $1.5 billion "Creating Futures" futures campaign in 2006 and has raised about 80 percent of that goal to date.
Seeking bequest gifts is not a new method deployed by the university, explained CU President Bruce Benson.
