The University of Alabama in Huntsville today announced it is tweaking its mandatory housing policy for some local students.
Students who live within 30 miles of campus will no longer be required to live on campus. It's a continuation of a change made two years ago in the aftermath of the mandatory housing plan for freshmen and sophomores that drew heavy criticism to former UAH President David Williams.
The latest change in the housing policy will go into effect in August.
In November 2009, Williams established a policy requiring all freshmen and sophomores to live on campus starting in August 2010. The intent was to break UAH free of its reputation as a commute campus and enhance student life.
